Carmelo the Toast of New York Again??

Carmelo Anthony called it a statement game, and the message should be clear for the Chicago Bulls….. If they do meet in the playoffs, the Bulls better finish off Anthony and the Knicks when they have the chance.

Anthony scored 43 points, his most since coming to New York last February, and made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 8.2 seconds left in overtime as the Knicks spoiled the return to the lineup for a rusty Derrick Rose and beat the Bulls 100-99 on Sunday.

Anthony tied it with a 3 late in regulation and scored the final five points of overtime in his signature performance since coming to New York last February. He only had the chance to pull it out because the Bulls missed four straight free throws in the final 34 seconds of regulation.

”This was a playoff game. We have a chance, we might play these guys in the playoffs if we keep doing what we’re doing and get that seed, so this was a big statement game for us and we willed this one tonight,” Anthony said.

It had the look and sound of a playoff game in the tense final minutes at a frenzied Madison Square Garden. The loudest roars went to Anthony, who screamed ”This is my house!” after the second 3-pointer in a place where he heard boos just last month…..He said Sunday’s big basket was one of the best of his career.

”This was one of the top,” he said. ”Overtime, Easter Sunday, everybody’s watching, everybody’s in the Garden, so this ranks as one of the top.”

Awkward Magic

When Nets brass called it a day March 14, the eve of the NBA trading deadline, they did so believing they had a deal with the Magic for Dwight Howard in place. Yes, Howard almost became a Net. But he also was on the verge of becoming a Laker if the Magic hierarchy had gone through with its threat of playing hardball with the indecisive superstar center.

According to league sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Orlando brass got fed up with Howard’s yes-no-maybe posturing and threatened to trade him to the Lakers, not his desired location, if he did not sign an agreement to waive the opt-out clause for the final season of his contract.

Howard eventually signed the papers, but only after he was told “he would be a Laker by the end of the day,” according to one source.

While both sides proclaimed loyalty as a factor in Howard’s decision to stay in Orlando, the contentious nature of the process gives the Nets ample hope they still may open in Brooklyn next season with Howard on their side.

“[The Magic] do not want to go through it all again,” according to one source who claimed Orlando wants a commitment from Howard on an extension before training camp to avoid his bolting as a free agent in 2013. “[The Magic] are determined to avoid another year of that.”By opting in for the final year at $18,091,770, Howard is bound to Orlando only through next season. Now come renewed reports Howard wants Stan Van Gundy out as coach for there to be any chance he will remain in Orlando, and Van Gundy said Thursday that Howard wants him fired.

Howard, whose camp had permission to talk to the Nets, Mavericks and Lakers, really only had one destination.

“He was adamant: New Jersey, New Jersey, New Jersey,” a source claimed.

Jared Sullinger ..Going Pro

After guiding Ohio State to the Final Four, two-time All-American forward Jared Sullinger figured he might as well see what he could do for an NBA team. The 6-foot-9 sophomore announced on Wednesday that he is giving up his final two seasons with the Buckeyes to make himself available for the NBA Draft in June. Most projections have him going in the top 10 picks.

”Going to the Final Four with a team that many people said we weren’t good enough, weren’t strong enough, weren’t mentally tough enough, and still being able to get to the Final Four with all the ups and downs we had, I think that was tremendous for this basketball team,” Sullinger said, flanked by his parents and coach Thad Matta. ”Once we got to the Final Four, we were trying to win it. But unfortunately, we fell short. I feel at peace with the decision I’m making.”

The Buckeyes lost to Kansas 64-62 in the national semifinals on Saturday.

Sullinger averaged 17.5 points and 9.2 rebounds a game while shooting 52 percent from the field, 77 percent at the line and 40 percent on 3-pointers while leading the Buckeyes to a 31-8 record and a Final Four berth. He was 63-10 as a starter.

UK over KU….Calipari gets his Ring!!

Won and Done, indeed. Maybe even Over and Out All that really matters is that Kentucky parlayed a roster full of NBA talent into a 67-59 victory Monday night over Kansas for the team’s eighth national NCAA basketball title – its first since 1998.

Kentucky’s top freshman, Anthony Davis, had a rough shooting night, but John Calipari coached this team to a wire-to-wire victory – a little dicey at the end – to cap a season that cried for no less than a championship for their ol’ Kentucky home.

”I wanted everybody to see, we were the best team this season,” said the coach who finally has the championship that eluded him for all these years. ”We were the best team. I wanted this to be one for the ages.”

Doron Lamb, a sophomore with first-round-draft-pick possibilities, led the Wildcats (38-2) with 22 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers that put them up by 16 with 10 minutes left.

The Jayhawks (32-7), kings of the comeback all season, fought to the finish and trimmed that deficit to five with 1:37 left. But Kentucky made five free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Rondo Messed around ..and got a Triple Double

Rajon Rondo got his pregame orders from Doc Rivers. The Celtics coach wanted his point guard to concentrate on scoring. Rondo did that – and so much more.

He finished with 16 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds, and Boston handed Miami its biggest loss of the season, pulling away with a dominant third quarter for a 91-72 win over the Heat on Sunday.

Rondo had eight assists in that period when the Celtics outscored the Heat 31-12, turning a 49-44 halftime lead into an 80-56 advantage. They stayed ahead by at least 19 the rest of the way for their fifth straight win.

He also had 10 points in the first quarter. Not bad for a sometimes shaky shooter who hadn’t scored more than seven points in any of his previous five games.

”We told Rondo that we needed him to be a scorer. Not a playmaker, a scorer,” Rivers said. ”He set the tone at the beginning of the game by doing that and I thought that loosened it up for everybody.”

He reached the triple-double mark for the fifth time this season with 8 1/2 minutes to play. It was his 13th consecutive game with at least 10 assists and another outstanding performance in a marquee game on national television, a scenario in which he seems to thrive.

Terrence Ross going Pro.

Washington guard Terrence Ross has decided to enter the NBA draft.

Ross averaged a team-high 16.4 points this season as Washington won the Pac-12 regular-season title and made it to the NIT semifinals. The 6-foot-6 Ross was the only player on the team to reach 30 points, accomplishing the feat twice, and had nine games of 20-plus points.

“I think I’m ready for this,” Ross said Sunday. “I’ve matured in the last two years just being in college. I’ve got a good supporting group around me with my family and close friends so I think I’m ready for this.”

Ross conferred with his family before making the decision to turn pro. He said they had a family meeting to make sure Ross was thinking of every possible angle before making his decision.

“My family was really supportive,” Ross said.

Ross averaged 25 points in four games in the NIT before a 68-67 overtime loss to Minnesota ended the Huskies’ season. He still has time to pull his name out of the draft, but he sounded as if he had made his choice.

“I’m all in right now,” he said. “I don’t think there’s anything that can make me change my decision. I’ve thought about this really hard, took a lot of time, sat down with my family, talked to them about it so I’ve made my decision and I’m not going to change it.”

Washington said on its men’s basketball Twitter feed that Ross plans to hire an agent.

Knicks lose Stoudemire for 4 Weeks

The New York Knicks hope to have Amare Stoudemire back before the end of the season after a second doctor said he won’t need surgery on the bulging disk in his back. The Knicks said Wednesday they expect Stoudemire to miss about two to four weeks while getting treatment. They had previously said he was out indefinitely after an MRI revealed the injury on Monday.

Point guard Jeremy Lin also will miss their game against Orlando on Wednesday because of a sore left knee, but Carmelo Anthony said he will play despite a strained right groin.

Stoudemire is returning from Miami, where he was given a second opinion on the injury. Both doctors agreed on non-surgical treatment and rehabilitation, which will include an epidural for pain relief.

That could allow Stoudemire to return before the regular season ends April 26. The Knicks hold a two-game lead over Milwaukee for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
