America’s Most Dis-Liked Athlete

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has been voted America’s most disliked athlete, edging out Tiger Woods for the dubious title in a poll released Wednesday by Forbes

Vick is still dealing with the backlash from a federal conviction on dog fighting charges, while Woods has dealt with poor performance on the golf course after a cheating scandal led to his divorce.

About 60 percent of fans polled disliked Vick, tying him with Woods, but more people expressed a strong dislike for Vick compared to Woods.

Jets receiver Plaxico Burress, who served jail time for accidentally shooting himself with an illegal handgun, was third with 56 percent. He was followed by Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh at 51 percent and Nets forward Kris Humphries at 50 percent.

Just five months ago, Suh topped a Forbes poll of the most liked players in the NFL. He was later suspended for two games for stomping on a Packers offensive lineman.

Humphries made the list following his short marriage to reality TV star Kim Kardashian.

The top 10 was rounded out by Heat star LeBron James (48 percent), Lakers star Kobe Bryant (45 percent), former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens (45 percent), Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez (44 percent) and NASCAR driver Kurt Busch (42 percent).

The survey was conducted by Nielsen and E-Poll Market Research.

Justin Tuck’s “Blue Buzz” Surprise

Those grins the New York Giants were sporting during their trip through the Canyon of Heroes may have gotten a boost from a nip or two of “Blue” booze…Moments before the Giants left the Meadowlands on Tuesday to celebrate their Super Bowl win, each member of the team — including the coaches and the front office — was given a custom-engraved 750-milliliter bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue whisky, a gift from gregarious defensive end Justin Tuck.

“I wanted to give the guys on the team, the coaches and everyone who got us to Indianapolis a personal gift to thank them for everything that they’ve done,” Tuck said.

Each bottle had the player’s name and “Super Bowl XLVI champions” engraved on it. The total tally for 80 bottles was $17,600.

“Johnnie Walker is kind of a working man’s drink,” fellow defensive end Dave Tollefson said of the premium scotch, which goes for $40 to $50 a drink. “Johnnie Walker and some Coke. It just speaks to the attitude of our team and the type of guy he is.”

An eyewitness said that minutes after Tuck delivered the bottles to his pals around 8:00am local time, some players were seen scrambling to their cars to stow the precious bottles, which sell for around $220 each.

“To be a Super Bowl champion, not once, but twice is a dream, and I wanted to give something special to the teammates and coaches that made the dream possible,” Tuck said. “My hope is that they share this with the friends and family who helped them achieve not only this individual win but the journey to it.”

Cortez Kennedy Elected to H.O.F…..Finally!!!

The Seattle Seahawks used the third overall selection of the 1990 NFL Draft on All-America defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy from the University of Miami (FL). The move proved to be wise as Kennedy became a fixture on the Seahawks defensive line for 11 seasons. Extremely durable, he did not miss a single game until his eighth season.

In his rookie season, Kennedy played in all 16 games, two of which were starts. He produced impressive numbers including a season-high 10 tackles and a sack against the Miami Dolphins. For his efforts, he was named to the NFL’s All-Rookie team.

The following season Kennedy moved into a full-time starting role at right defensive tackle for the Seahawks and responded by earning his first Pro Bowl berth. In 1992, despite the Seahawks finishing with a disappointing 2-14 record, Kennedy was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year. It marked just the third time in league history that a player from a losing team won the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year Award. He led Seattle that season with a career-high 14 sacks, the most of any interior lineman, and also recorded a career-best 92 tackles, recovered one fumble and batted down two passes.

Although he was often double- or even triple-teamed Kennedy managed to lead or rank near the top in tackles each season. In 1996, he was voted to a team record sixth consecutive Pro Bowl and also was named the team’s MVP and the winner of the Steve Largent Award given to the player that best exemplified the spirit, dedication and integrity of the Seahawks. He added two more Pro Bowls following the 1998 and 1999 seasons.

Kennedy recorded one of his finest seasons in 1999. A ten-year veteran, he started all 16 games, recorded 73 tackles, 6.5 sacks and intercepted two passes to help the Seahawks reach the playoffs for the first time since 1988.

In all, he registered 58 sacks, intercepted three passes and scored one touchdown on a fumble recovery during his 167-game career. He twice led the team in sacks (1992 and 1995).

Aside from his eight Pro Bowls, Kennedy was named first-team All-NFL in 1992, 1993 and 1994, selected second-team All-Pro twice, All-AFC four times and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s.

On September 17, 2006, Kennedy became the 10th member inducted into the Seahawks Ring of Honor.

Manning is the (Man) again ….Giants win Superbowl XLVI 21-17

Elite and Eli. One and the same.

And now there are two Super Bowl championships and two MVPs to prove it.

Eli Manning is the big man in the NFL after one-upping Tom Brady and leading the New York Giants to a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots in Sunday’s Super Bowl – in older brother Peyton’s house, at that.

”This isn’t about one person,” Manning insisted. ”This is about a team coming together.”

A team led by a quarterback who months ago claimed – to snickers throughout the league – that he belonged in the same stratosphere as Brady, and then proved it.

Just as Manning did four years ago when the Giants ruined New England’s perfect season, he guided them 88 yards to the decisive touchdown, which the Patriots didn’t contest as Ahmad Bradshaw ran 6 yards with 57 seconds left.

”Certainly Eli has had a great season. He made some great throws in the fourth quarter, and they deserved to win,” Brady said.

They got some help from Patriots coach Bill Belichick, whose late-game risk didn’t turn out as he planned. Belichick reasoned the Giants would run the clock down and kick a short field goal, so he gambled by allowing the six points.

The ploy failed.

”Ball was inside the 10-yard line, a 90 percent field goal conversion,” he said. ”Sure, could have done a better job in a lot of things.”…….Manning did everything asked of him in the final minutes, a habit for the eight-year veteran. He’s beaten the Patriots in two thrilling Super Bowls. The Giants (13-7), who stood 7-7 in mid-December, now own the football world, and Manning owns two Super Bowl MVP awards, the same number as Brady.

It was a classic I-can-top-that showdown with the outcome in doubt until the last desperation pass fell to the turf as the last second ticked off the clock. Manning started the game with nine straight completions, a Super Bowl record; Brady hit 16 straight over the second and third quarters, breaking Joe Montana’s Super bowl record of 13.

Manning finished 30 for 40 for 296 yards and one touchdown, while Brady was 27 for 41 for 276 yards with two TDs and one interception.

”It’s been a wild game, a wild season,” Manning said.

Manning led six comeback victories during the season and set an NFL record with 15 fourth-quarter touchdown passes, he saved his best one for the biggest game of the season…maybe his career.

Friendly Wager between Governors

I’ll see your chowda, and raise you a cheesecake….Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is betting chips, pies and bowls of New England clam chowder that his Patriots will win Super Bowl XLVI. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is putting bagels, yogurt and cheesecake on the line in support of the Giants.

The bet for Sunday’s NFL championship game highlights regional cuisine that this year will be donated to local food banks.

If the Giants lose Sunday’s game, Cuomo will send 46 cases of New York-made yogurt, 46 dozen bagels from Manhattan’s Ess-a-Bagel and 46 cheesecakes from Junior’s in Brooklyn to a Massachusetts food bank.

If the Patriots lose, Patrick will send 46 pies from The Pie Ladies in Centerville, 46 cases of chips made in Needham Heights and clam chowder from Boston-based Legal Seafoods.

Seahawks to get new Uniforms!!!!… New Carolina Panthers Logo

Why do we care about the Panthers changing their logo for the first time in the team’s 18-year history? Well, there have been rumors the Panthers and Seahawks were the two teams that notified the league of looming changes, presumably to logo and uniform.

In fact, the Seahawks uniforms will be changing.

That has been the word for a while now. .

What we know: Nike becomes the NFL uniform supplier in 2012, taking over for Reebok. The expectation is the Seahawks will be getting new uniforms.

What we don’t know: What those uniforms look like. There are a number of drawings on the InterGoogle, but those aren’t official nor are they believed to be close to the actual model.

What we’ve heard: A little birdie gave out a few hints the helmets will be darker, and there will be some feather trim. The helmets are not expected to go back to being silver. But as McLoughlin indicated, it’s not going to be a massive overhaul.
